RONGAI ROUTE 6 DAYS

6 Days

The Rongai Route is considered one of the easiest and most scenic routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, with a high success rate for summiting. Starting on the northern side of the mountain, just south of the Kenyan border, it is one of the least trafficked paths, offering a more tranquil and less crowded experience.

The route provides climbers with a unique opportunity to view the mountain from various perspectives, as the descent is made via the Marangu Route on the southern side. This diverse route allows trekkers to appreciate the mountain’s varying landscapes.

The journey to the trailhead takes approximately 3 hours from Moshi, passing through vibrant villages and coffee plantations. A stop will be made to register climbing permits at Marangu.

Alternatively, the Rongai Route can also be accessed from Amboseli National Park in Kenya, which requires about 2 hours for the journey, including the border crossing. For this option, we will need copies of passports in advance to ensure a smooth process.

Itinerary

Day 01 :
Hotel to Simba Camp

After breakfast and a final briefing, we’ll drive to Nale Moru, a charming village located about 2 hours from Moshi (including a stop to get permits at Marangu). Once we reach the starting point, we’ll sign in and prepare the porters for the trek. From here, we begin our hike on a well-maintained path, passing through fields of maize and potatoes before entering a lush pine forest. As we continue, the path gently ascends through dense forest, home to a variety of wildlife. As the forest thins, we arrive at Simba Camp, situated at the edge of the moorland zone, with panoramic views over the Kenyan plains.

  • Elevation: 2000m/6560ft to 2650m/8700ft
  • Distance: 6km/4mi
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Montane Forest
  • Meals: Lunch and Dinner
Day 02 :
Simba Camp to Second Cave

Today, we continue our steady ascent towards Second Cave. The trail offers spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the Eastern ice fields along the crater rim. The landscape changes as we leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone.

  • Elevation: 2650m/8700ft to 3450m/11,300ft
  • Distance: 6km/4mi
  • Walking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 03 :
Second Cave to Third Cave

We continue our trek today, heading towards Third Cave. The terrain becomes more rugged as we move higher up the mountain. The path offers a clear view of the route ahead, with the surrounding landscape becoming more barren as we ascend.

  • Elevation: 3450m/11,300ft to 3880m/12,700ft
  • Distance: 9km/5mi
  • Walking Time: 2-3 hours
  • Habitat: Semi-desert
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 04 :
Third Cave to Kibo Hut

The hike to Kibo Hut brings us closer to the Kibo crater wall. This is a more demanding section of the trek, with the landscape transitioning into an alpine desert. Once we reach Kibo Hut, we’ll rest for the remainder of the day, conserving energy and preparing for the summit ascent, which begins in the early hours of the next morning.

  • Elevation: 3880m/12,700ft to 4750m/15,600ft
  • Distance: 5km/3mi
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 05 :
Kibo Hut to Summit and Return to Horombo Hut

At around midnight to 2 am, we begin our ascent to the summit, tackling steep scree or snow-covered trails as we climb towards Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, we continue the final stretch to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The views from the summit are truly breathtaking, and we’ll pause for photos to commemorate the achievement. After spending some time at the summit, we descend back to Kibo Hut for a rest and lunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.

This is the most challenging day, and the ascent will be slow and steady ("pole pole"), with plenty of switchbacks. Make sure to dress warmly, as it will be cold during the early hours of the climb.

  • Elevation: 4700m/15,500ft to 5895m/19,340ft, then down to 3700m/12,200ft
  • Distance: 6km/4mi up / 15km/9mi down
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours up / 6-8 hours down
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 06 :
Horombo Hut to Trailhead and Return to Moshi

After a well-earned rest, we begin our descent from Horombo Hut. The trail takes us through moorland before we reach Mandara Hut, and we continue descending through lush forest to the Marangu gate. The lower elevations can be muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles will be useful. Light clothing, such as shorts and t-shirts, should suffice, though you should keep rain gear and warmer layers handy.

At Marangu gate, our vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi, completing your Kilimanjaro adventure.

  • Elevation: 3700m/12,200ft to 1700m/5500ft
  • Distance: 20km/12.5mi
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Forest
  • Meals: Breakfast
