The Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey Route,” is known for being a more challenging and expensive option compared to the Marangu route.
When compared to other Kilimanjaro routes, the Machame route stands out as one of the best choices, offering excellent opportunities for acclimatization while remaining relatively cost-effective.
This route is considered difficult and is better suited for trekkers who are more adventurous and have some experience in hiking or backpacking.
The Machame route is famous for its stunning and diverse landscapes, although its popularity has led to larger crowds, which can somewhat diminish the experience. The route approaches the summit from the southwest and descends via the Mweka route. Along the way, climbers are treated to spectacular views of the vast Shira Plateau, have the option to scramble up the Lava Tower, tackle the challenging Great Barranco Wall, and pass under Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field.
While certain parts of this route are steeper and physically more demanding than the Marangu and Rongai routes, it remains easier overall.
It’s an excellent choice for acclimatization, offering numerous opportunities to “walk high, sleep low”, which helps with altitude adjustment.
This route provides a challenging trek through five distinct climatic zones, showcasing some of the mountain’s most stunning scenery.
A great feature of the Machame route is the ability to split the final day’s climb into two, allowing climbers to rest before the final summit push.
Though the Machame route is very popular, it remains a favorite due to its rewarding views and well-balanced trek.
Itinerary
If you've chosen the optional airport transfers, we will meet you at Kilimanjaro or Arusha Airport and transport you to your hotel in Moshi.
This day is dedicated to a pre-trek briefing at your hotel, where we will go over the trek details and ensure you're fully prepared. We'll also check your gear, and if necessary, provide any equipment rentals. It’s advisable to arrive at least one day before the trek begins.
We begin with a 45-minute drive from Moshi to Machame Gate, passing through the village of Machame located on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro.
After entering the park, we begin our hike through the lush rainforest on a winding path, gradually ascending a ridge. The trail can be muddy and slippery at lower altitudes, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. We hike for a short distance before reaching Machame Camp.

While we end the day at nearly the same elevation, this day is vital for acclimatization, helping your body adjust for the summit push.

We depart very early (between midnight and 2 am), heading towards the summit via the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. After ascending through scree, we reach Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most physically and mentally demanding part of the trek. From Stella Point, we ascend for another hour to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After taking in the views at the summit, we begin our descent, returning to Mweka Camp with a break at Barafu for lunch. Due to loose gravel, gaiters and trekking poles are helpful. We arrive at Mweka Camp, where we can relax and enjoy our last evening on the mountain.
