Mount Meru
Rising to about 4,566 meters/14,980 feet, Mount Meru is a striking dormant stratovolcano at the heart of Arusha National Park, famed for its horseshoe-shaped crater, sheer inner cliffs, and a prominent ash cone. The classic 3–4 day ascent follows the Momella Route, staying at Miriakamba and Saddle huts before a pre‑dawn push to Socialist Peak for a spectacular sunrise with Kilimanjaro on the horizon. Trails climb from lush montane forest into giant heather and alpine moorland, with chances to spot giraffe, buffalo, and abundant birdlife—hence the requirement for an armed ranger escort. Steep but non‑technical, Meru is ideal for acclimatization before Kilimanjaro, offering fewer crowds, dramatic ridge walking, and frequent cloud inversions. Aim for the drier months (June–October and December–February), and pack for cold, wind, and altitude.
