Gorilla Trekking
A gorilla trek is one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences in Africa. The chance to encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is the main reason many travelers visit Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Gorilla trekking involves hiking through the tropical forests to spend precious moments observing these gentle giants in the wild.
Treks are available year-round, but the best time to go is during the drier months of June, July, August, September, and December. During this period, the forest trails are less muddy, the slopes are easier to climb, and sightings are more enjoyable.
• January & February: Low season, with fewer visitors and minimal rainfall, offering a quieter trekking experience.
• March to May: Heavy rains make the trails slippery and challenging, but the forests are lush and less crowded.
• June to August: Peak season. This is the most popular time for gorilla trekking, so permits should be booked well in advance.
• September & December: Excellent conditions, with dry trails and favorable weather.
In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Uganda), temperatures remain relatively consistent throughout the year, averaging around 11°C (52°F) in the mornings and 23°C (73°F) in the afternoons.
